Forums

Each course contains an Announcement forum which allows communication from teachers to their students in a group. You will see links to these on the page immediately after accessing a course, but the forum can also be accessed via Forums in the This course menu under Quick links.

Announcement forum

The Announcement forum is intended for giving information, reminders etc to students. Only teachers can post to the forum and students cannot reply. It can be used to post details of homework. Files can be attached files to posts, so it could also be used as a repository for revision sheets or other resources. All users are subscribed to the Announcements forum, so students will receive notifications via the site or via email (if they have a valid email address set in their profile), depending on how they have set preferences. 

The Announcements forum therefore provides an efficient way to email your whole group. It has the additional advantage that even if students lose the email, the message remains in the forum for reference.

Initially your profile is set to “Hide my email address from non-privileged users”. This means that these emails will have your name and a “no-reply” address on them. If you would prefer your own address to appear on these emails (the one specified in your profile), then go to your Profile, select the Edit profile tab and change the setting in the Email display drop-down box.

Use the Preferences menu (in the drop-down menu at the top right of the screen)

to control when and how you receive forum posts by email (this is referred to as a ‘forum preferences’). You can set your default preference for forum subscriptions here. However, you can also set preferences differently for each forum, and in addition you can unsubscribe from individual discussions within a forum, if they are not relevant to you.
